Poor Posture Linked to Cell Phones

Today’s technology allows us to connect with people and discover information anytime, anywhere.  And if you live on this planet, then you know that people spend A LOT of time staring down at their smartphones or tablets.  But, what you might not know is that the wonderful devices that we hold so dear are ruining our posture.

Good Posture Defined

Poor Posture Linked to Cell Phones

Good posture can be defined as when the ears and the shoulders are aligned and the scapula, or shoulder blade, is retracted. When the spine is properly aligned, stress to the spine is reduced. The simple act of maintaining good posture can increase a person’s likelihood to take risks and make them feel more powerful. This is due in part to increased production of testosterone and serotonin and decreased cortisol levels.

Negative Effects of Bad Posture

There is a reason your mom told you to “stand up straight”. Just as good posture has positive health benefits, bad posture has negative health benefits. According to a study by Dr. Kenneth K. Hansraj, “Loss of the natural curve of the cervical spine leads to incrementally increased Poor Posture Linked to Cell Phonesstresses about the cervical spine. These stresses may lead to early wear, tear, degeneration, and possibly surgeries”.

Growing Epidemic

So now that we are aware, what should we do? The simple reality is that smartphones aren’t going anywhere and people’s love for them isn’t waning either. Spending less time with your head tilted forward is a start. Being cognizant of your posture and correcting it when it’s not proper should be a priority as well.
